Is AMD Going Big In The Long Run?

With current CPU processing speed nearly maxed out and the practical limitations of multi-core technology close to reached, the next trend in CPU technology will very likely be efficiency. AMD's current lines of Accelerated Processing Units for laptops are leading the way. The E-240 single-core APU achieves 1.5 GHz using only 18 watts of power. The E-350 dual-core APU achieves 1.6 GHz on just 18 watts. Both E-Series chips achieve nearly 500MHz graphic processing speed also.

Perhaps the most impressive are the even more efficent C-Series APUs. The C-30 single-core model performs at 1.2 GHz with 277 MHz of graphic processing on only 9 watts of power. And the C-50 dual-core model wich clocks in at 1.0 GHz and 276 MHz graphics capacity on just 9 watts also.

In addition to the new very efficient series of laptop processors, AMD has introduced a new series of onboard graphic processing that is becoming very popular with demanding video games and rendering software. Add the fact that they have a long line of desktop multi-core processors that achieve 3.0 GHz or more on less than 100 watts of power.

At $7.59 a share, you have to wonder what everyone is waitng for.
